5 Actions to Increase Your Tips and Confidence Overnight
When you’re a Mixologist, or a Bartender, just making the drinks, having technical excellence, is important, but even more important is how your guests respond to your personality, and how you anticipate their needs and create a unique experience. Here are five things that you can immediately do to not only make more money behind the bar, but to be more charming, and make a dramatic difference in how people respond to you in all walks of life:
- Wear something unique- There was a famous case study done where a girl wore a flower in her hair, and she made 17% more in tips than the other girls. And the girls were randomized, it wasn’t the same one every time, but the results were very consistent. The question is why? The answer is that anything you can do to stand out, to be unique, will allow people to start seeing you as a person, instead of a machine that hands them drinks. Needless to say, people tip other people better than they do machines. The trick is not to stand out too much, you don’t want to have a clown suit effect, where you stand out for the wrong reasons, because it’ll backfire. But little things: The bracelet you always seem to get complimented on, the earings that are just a little flashy, the vest, these are all things that will work for you. Getting noticed, in the right way, is the purpose of fashion, and as Coco Chanel says, when you wear the right thing, people notice you, when you wear the wrong thing, people notice what you’re wearing.
- Use Incidental touching- There are numerous studies on servers who lightly touch their guests as they are taking orders, and their tips are always higher. The trick is to do this without unsettling people. The best way to do it, is to use incidental touching. A handshake, and momentarily touching their shoulder with the outside of your hand. Touching in the right way connotes warmth, familiarity, and openness.
- Talk to the little people- Most of us are like hawks, we look for the people who can most benefit us in an interaction, and spend most of our time talking to them. The great Bartenders and Mixologists are like water: They derive joy, satisfaction, and ultimately better tips, by paying attention to the little people. The bus boy nobody ever notices, the person in the group who feels left out, pay attention to these people first, before you dote on the stars. You’ll feel great, and the results will surprise you.
- Give them a gift they don’t expect- When most people think of giving a gift, they think of free drinks or some financial incentive. These kinds of gifts can work, but they’re not as effective as a gift your guests don’t expect. One bartender goes to the bank every couple weeks, and gets a stack of $2 bills, and when she gives out change, she makes sure to give her guests a $2 bill, they remember her as good luck, and they tip her more. Another bartender keeps a bag of Hershey’s Miniatures near the register, and when it’s time for the check, he throws in a couple of little candy bars. He’s the only one who does it, and people notice.
- Remember names, drinks, and extreme details- Have you ever wanted to become a “regular” somewhere? Have you ever wanted to feel like you belonged, and when you brought other people, that you would have special status? We’ve all wanted to feel that way, but the truth is, it’s the bartender who makes you feel like a regular, if she’s good, she’ll remember your name, your drink (or what kind of drinks you like), and something extreme about your last conversation:
Hey Alice, another White Russian? Did you ever get that hibiscus flower tattoo, or did you change your mind?
And voila, they’re a regular. You’ll find that regulars will tip much better, and this is the single most powerful way to create them.
